Tell Todd it worked perfect in barreling head high Porto!
A Cali one-board-quiver by Proctor celebrates its 10 yr. birthday.
Three friends, a shaping room, some board banter, and kinetic surfing pepper this remembrance of the first of its kind. Although this shape has undergone many iterations throughout the years, the original design has retained a fond and relevant longevity.

In this episode of the American Surfboard Factory, take a look into the world of hydrodynamics; the concepts behind what makes a versatile everyday performance board tick . . . and see what it means for you. Proctor dissects his arsenal of one board quivers known as the Monsta series. Nick Rozsa articulates in a demonstration that inspires.

Todd explains the use of hydrofoil concepts in an everyday board. Also exploring the elastic properties in its rubber-like construction. A cross-section of 4 surfers varying in age, builds & styles demonstrate.

Da Monsta is our ‘one board quiver’.
The most versatile board for waves two foot to just overhead; mushy or hollow. It has become most surfers’ “normal everyday board for all conditions”.
The only complaint has become, “I don’t ride any of my other boards anymore!”
This new life form is the high performance great grandchild of the Lil’ Rascal….it has morphed, grown a bit sleeker, but has stayed true to it’s roots of blistering speed through its heritage of a shorter, wider, stalkier persona. Where this offspring has matured and pushed past it’s predecessors is in the area of versatility and in-the-pocket mobility.
The Monsta keeps the speed constant….you don’t have to rely so much on the wave dictating where you’ll derive your speed from….the board just goes, yet has the hold of a normal good waves shortboard when you bare some teeth into your turns. Where the Rascal utilized a spiral vee contour running through the fin cluter,
I’ve plowed all those guts out of the Monsta and left one deep even concave with subtle inset doubles running through the fins…as well there is also concave running right off the tail block; we call it the ‘exhaust pipe‘.

MONSTA HD:
‘Through Gates of Splendor’ … in the cathedrals of our soul, we realize there’s something more… Monsta outline & rails with Hideoscillous rocker & bottom. Ideal for small scale waves; incredible back foot control through on-rail full-speed cutties.
MONSTA STEP-UP:
This is the Monsta design ridden a couple inches longer than the standard Monsta, a touch narrower, with thinner rails, a sleeker outline and a roundtail for positive hold through turns with power. If you like the Monsta design and want one for waves slightly bigger or with more power, than this is the board for you.

A tale of two Monstas:
Two boards, same dims, same outline, same rails, different rockers and bottoms. 5’6” x 18 5/8” x 2 1/4” 25L with one being a #Flyinmonstasurfboard (rocker of the #Flyinlionsurfboard with the outline and rails of the #Monstasurfboard) and the other being the historical yet still relevant #Monstasurfboard v.2. They are for Brandon in Costa Rica. It’s a fun design process journey to see what different bottoms do on the same planshape and rails. I’ve found it’s a great way to venture out without veering off…to discover what works good, what works better and what works best for you.
Also introducing some new tailpads by @octopusisreal They are filthy good and we like their organic industrial look. Octo pads now available for new boards and at the shop…punk rock front foot pads too.
The Ghost:
For those of you who like the Monsta, this is a high performance shortboard counterpart to that design. I’ve kept the rocker and bottom contours the same as that of the Monsta….so same speed, same positive flow…The outline, rail volume and deck foil is more “shortboardy, but with the wide point moved slightly forward & a bit fuller nose outline than a standard “needled out” perfect waves shortboard. The rails are less full than that of the Monsta; more pulled down, but boxy in shape.
Experience: beginner – advanced. The flattest and best for mushy small point surf
Experience: beginner – advanced. ‘the people’s board’ being the most user friendly from novice to expert and working in the widest ranges of wave types and sizes. The working man’s board. A quick and easy, quick paddling, drivey, plenty of foam, versatile, fast, fun, turns-on-a-dime rippin’ board for those of us that can’t always wait for the perfect conditions to come together. Small and crumbly – no problem; overhead and good….also wonderful; whatever conditions you encounter when you get the chance to jump out there, this model guarantees you’ll have fun. A board for the people.
Experience: beginner – advanced. Blends the low entry under the chest / flip tip of the Pipsqueak with a flatter run through the belly rocker and some extra tail flip off the back fin. Combined with heavy deep single to inset double concave bottom gives this board incredible small wave drive without compromising a nice crisp whippy feel in turns
Experience: intermediate – advanced. Has a wide-open sweet spot even single-to-inset-doubles & a bit more tail rocker to handle the demands of hyperactive rippers who can’t stay out of the pocket – or for surfers who’s local spots tend to be small, but can still be small and hollow at the same time i.e. the N.Y./ N.J. beachbreaks, Newport, Huntington, Texas, Japan, etc…small beachbreaky kind of stuff…found all over really…
Experience: intermediate – advanced. Is a pockety Monsta with deeper concaves for more backfooted surfers who like to release the tail & go for airs. The ‘inverted fulcrum’ rocker shift allows gravity’s laws to be bent … even broken. Invert yourself.
Experience: intermediate – advanced. Combines the Monsta outline & rails with Hideoscillous rocker & bottom. Ideal for small scale waves; incredible back foot control through on-rail full-speed cutties. Mallet instead of scalpel.
Experience: intermediate – advanced. Combines the Monsta outline & rails with Jetstream hydrofoil-esque concaves to generate smooth controllable speed – a paradigm shift for surfers of all ages, skill sets & abilities.
